Tournament example: your 42bb stack faces an 11bb shove

You have 42bb on the button. The small blind has 11bb and the big blind has 37bb. Action folds to you. Against the small blind, you are 11bb effective. Against the big blind, you are 37bb effective. Your opening decision has to account for both players because either can continue.

Suppose you raise to 2.2bb, the small blind shoves, and the big blind folds. The decision is now a call for the small blind’s 11bb stack. Your remaining chips do not make the call 42bb deep. Pot odds, the shoving range, and tournament payouts decide whether your hand can continue.
